Saving the Great Trees of Derbyshire is a Heritage Lottery funded project looking to raise awareness of, connect people to, and safeguard the county's veteran trees

A veteran tree can be described as ‘a tree that is of interest biologically, culturally or aesthetically because of its age, size or condition' and over 4,500 have been discovered within Derbyshire!

The project is focusing on recording the many traditions and legends surrounding local veteran trees and on celebrating their value to our communities and environment through publications and events. We will also be providing training and support to land managers and communities to enable them to both care for their local veteran trees and to create veteran trees of the future. The grant will also allow us to identify trees at risk and use specialist management techniques to save them.

If you know of any stories and legends linked to old trees near to where you live we would love for you to share them with us. To submit stories or find out more about the project, please contact Louise Valantine
