Community-led nature recovery wins Trust national Award for fairness and inclusion

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust has been awarded The Wildlife Trusts’ Dame Mary Smieton Award, a national honour recognising outstanding commitment to fairness, inclusion, and empowering communities to lead nature’s recovery.

This national recognition celebrates the Trust’s ongoing work to ensure people are at the heart of community-driven projects to shape nature-rich, accessible spaces across Derbyshire. From rewilding Allestree Park and the creation of a Green Corridor in Derby City Centre, to bringing landowners and communities together to inspire nature-led approaches in the Wild Peak.

Following the launch of its Wilder 2030 Strategic Plan this year, the Trust has continued to expand its efforts to dismantle barriers to accessing and connecting with nature.

By engaging with people, exploring new ways to listen, learn, and respond, and co-creating projects with the communities, the Trust is striving to ensure everyone can contribute to a Wilder Derbyshire where people and wildlife thrive together.

Dr Jo Smith, Chief Executive of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, said:

“We are incredibly proud to receive the Dame Mary Smieton Award. This recognition reflects the creativity, courage, and dedication of our staff, volunteers, partners, and the communities who work with us every day.

“From Allestree Park to our broader landscapes, we are making a significant impact, setting a standard for inclusive, community-driven conservation.

“This award is a reminder that a Wilder Derbyshire is a shared endeavour. By working side-by-side with communities, we can create lasting change and ensure everyone has the opportunity to shape a wilder future.”
