More and more evidence shows that outdoor learning provides many direct and indirect benefits for children's development and academic abilities. Creating opportunities for outdoor learning is also a great way to enhance your school's green credentials as part of your climate action plans and inspire the next generation of nature champions.
The AIM Qualifications Leader in Outdoor Learning Level 2 award is designed to equip teachers with the skills, knowledge and confidence to to take your learning into nature, using your school grounds or local greenspaces as your classroom. You will learn the benefits of learning outdoors, what your grounds and natural spaces offer for delivering the primary curriculum, risk-benefit assessment and how to look after your site.
Who is this course for?
This course would benefit anyone with experience of delivering the KS1 / KS2 curriculum and those curious about how to introduce outdoor learning practices into their teaching.
What does this course cover?
This accredited course dives into the essential steps to successful outdoor teaching, including:
- The purpose and benefits of outdoor learning
- How to encourage children to take action for wildlife
- Chosing locations for outdoor learning
- Strategies for site development, improving grounds for wildlife and caring for your site
- How to plan and deliver outdoor learning
- Risk-benefit assessments and the impact of your activities.
- Understanding of policies and procedures.
Course Structure:
This is a two day course attended in person. To complete the qualification element, you will submit follow up work to gain a certificate accredited at Level 2 by AIM Qualifications. As part of your portfolio of work, you will be asked to submit evidence of delivering outdoor learning sessions.

Course Dates:
Thursday 12th and Friday 13th of June 2025 (9.30am - 5pm).
You must be able to attend both days.
About the venue:
Both sessions will be held in the Discovery Room Classroom at Carsington Water Visitor Centre, Derbyshire. The site hosts a range of facilities, including a cafe. We will also visit our outdoor classroom area.
What to bring with you:
Much of the course takes place outdoors so please dress appropriately for the time of year, including sturdy footwear. In addition:
- Photo ID (for the qualification registration process)
- Pens/note pad
- Packed lunch for both days (tea and coffee provided)
About your tutor
Diane Gould has over 30 years experience in outdoor learning, with the last 15 years spent within the conservation sector. She also has a Masters in Environmental Management and Business Strategy and teaches our Forest School Leader, Leader of Outdoor Learning, Nature Connection and Trainer Skills courses.
