Witches Oak Water Sighting by Rod Key

Thursday 28th December - It was a beautiful crisp and cold morning with a WNW wind force 2/3 blowing and a heavy frost still lay on the ground. Although no Smew were actually on the Reserve 3 birds were found on a lake just off the reserve-a drake and 2 "redheads" with a small party of 12 Tufted Duck. A total of 19 Goldeneye were on the reserve with an adult Herring Gull and a Cettis Warbler singing again other highlights. Totals of birds on the reserve were as follows:- 3 Great Crested Grebes, 16 Cormorants, 1 Grey Heron, 6 Mute Swans, 36 Wigeon, 2 Gadwall, 15 Teal, 5 Shoveler, 8 Pochard, 91 Tufted Duck, 19 Goldeneye, 2 adult Common Gulls, 1 adult Herring Gull, 6 Blackbirds, 1 Cettis Warbler. Birds not on the Reserve included 1 Shelduck, 72 Wigeon, 60 Gadwall, a female Pintail,10 Shoveler, 8 Goosander and 3 Goldfinch.
