Witches Oak Water Sightings by Vic Bevan

Posted: Monday 18th December 2017 by Witchesoakwater

18th December - A beautiful winter morning, cold with clear blue skies and almost no wind. Water levels were very high with access just possible to all areas in wellingtons. Lake margins and some areas of the open water were thinly iced over. Waterbird numbers have increased significantly, presumably as a consequence of the extended cold spell of weather, with 280 Wigeon, 236 Tufted Duck, 222 Black-headed Gull, 200 Greylag Geese, 156 Teal, 145 Mallard, 95 Mallard and 95 Coot notable counts. A Raven flew over calling, 7 Cetti's Warbler were also calling, a Woodcock and 6 Goosander were on the reserve. A Fox was on the Phase 2 access track. Full counts were 4 Little Grebe, 17 Great-Crested Grebe, 24 Cormorant, 2 Little Egret, 5 Grey Heron, 24 Mute Swan, 200 Greylag Goose, 10 Canada Goose, 280 Wigeon, 95 Gadwall, 156 Teal, 145 Mallard, 7 Shoveler, 16 Pochard, 236 Tufted Duck, 18 Goldeneye, 6 Goosander, 2 Moorhen, 95 Coot, 3 Snipe, 222 Blck-headed Gull and 1 Herring Gull.
