Witches Oak Water sightings by Vic Bevan

Posted: Friday 15th December 2017 by Witchesoakwater

The morning was again bright but cold with a NNW wind force 2 blowing which did increase to force 3 by late morning. I had arranged to meet Roy Frost on site at 9.00.a.m. and we did the whole area together. Unfortunately due to the R.Trent having overflowed it's banks it was impossible to drive over to look at the Shardlow side as the road was closed with no access for lorries, cars etc. Anybody planning to visit this weekend might want to take this into consideration. The Reserve was very quiet with the highlights being 1 Little Egret, 1 Shelduck, 1 Chiffchaff and 19 Goldeneye. Total counts on the reserve were as follows:- 3 Great Crested Grebes, 26 Cormorants, 1 Little Egret, 2 Grey Herons, 9 Mute Swans, 1 Shelduck, 7 Wigeon, 80 Teal, 2 Pochard, 55 Tufted Duck, 19 Goldeneye, 1 Common Buzzard, 40 Lapwing, c200 Black Headed Gulls, 2 Common Gulls-ads, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker,4 Blackbirds, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Long Tailed Tt and a Bulfinch. Elsewhere on site a large flock of c190 Greylag Geese were very vocal and mobile, 15 Pochard were nice and a drake Goosander flew through. Also on the sand pit near the works an adult Leeser Black Back Gull of the race "intermedius" was feeding on what appeared to be a fish carcase
