Posted: Saturday 2nd September 2006 by Witchesoakwater

Overcast today, somewhat cooler than recent days with a light westerly wind. Needed to check water levels after adjustments to sluices made on Sunday. Water levels still generally quite high, but levels on Phase 2 lakes 9 & 11 are starting to drop, but with still a way to go to uncover areas of muddy margin. Bird highlights were 2 Kingfishers and 2 Green Sandpipers, all on Phase 1, with 2 broods of Mute Swan, 2 broods of Great Crested Grebe, and a juvenile Little Grebe. Total counts 177 Tufted Duck, 65 Gadwall, 47 Coot, 40 Mallard, 38 Mute Swan, 26 Black-headed Gull, 23 Great Crested Grebe, 9 Moorhen, 8 Cormorant, 6 Shoveler, 5 Teal, 5 Grey Heron, 3 Pochard, 3 Little Grebe, 2 Common Tern, 2 Kingfisher, 2 Green Sandpiper, 1 Little Egret, and 1 Lapwing. Also Blue Tit, Wren, Long-tailed Tit, Reed Bunting, Jay, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Wood Pigeon, Blackbird and Pheasant.
