Erewash Meadows sighting reported by Dave Sneap

2 common cranes approaching & calling from the NE. Looking to land with legs down.

The last report was sent to Derbyshire Wildlife Trust dated 28th just a day early for a significant event the following day Saturday, when the first ( SB) of 2 regulars saw 2 common cranes approaching & calling from the NE. Looking to land with legs down ( photographed by finder ) they circled BM twice before flying down the valley. Shortly after (KB) taking his dogs out from Stoney Lane the 2 cranes where flushed off the field when the metal gate that Notts CC recently installed clanged shut behind him. We will have to try wrapping some tape around the latches, because unless you are very careful & close them quietly which is difficult, they make every living thing (ex humans) dive for cover, or alternately they are up and away.
Other species noted = Shoveler = up to 19 from 29th Sep still.
Little Grebe Ad+ young still. At least 1 of the Pink-feet still with Greylags on 5th. Water Rail 5th & 7th. B H Gulls = 300+ gathered on the mud 6th, accompanied by a lone Common Gull, the first since cApril. Stonechats are showing probably daily with 5 on the 5th & 1 to 3 other days. Chiffchaffs have been scarse this autumn & todays individual is the first for a few days. Finally a Raven also today (7th Oct) is the first for about 3 weeks
