Drakelow by Thomas Cockburn

DRAKELOW NATURE RESERVE: Wednesday 31st January. I am grateful to KW for passing on notes of his visit. FLOOD POOL: The pool at the old weighbridge site, although passable, has not improved and may be a prolonged problem. Currently the DWT is looking for a solution. WATERFOWL: The usual mix of was present with seven Mute Swans, two Little Grebes and a Great Crested Grebe on site. The duck count was logged as 32 Mallard, 32 Teal, 23 Wigeon, 56 Gadwall, 31 Shovelers, Goldeneye, two Goosanders and a Long-tailed Duck. Waders were represented by six Snipe and two Oystercatchers the latter being newly arrived. A Water Rail was also noted. Two Egyptian Geese were reported as were Buzzard and Sparrowhawk. FOOTFALL: So far as I have been able to ascertain visitors numbered 184. In part this would be due to the presence of the Hooded Merganser but there was a marked decrease in the last week that could be attributed to the flood pool. I stress that these numbers are extremely subjective and are probably much higher as so few visitors make log entries. With thanks to Paul & Leslie.
