Jan 3rd: Rain, and the high River Derwent has expanded the area of water, with the main pool over its usual banks. Wigeon 10male, 3female; Mallard 3male, 2female all motionless on the island; Black headed gulls 11, Canada geese around 40 mostly grazing on the grass north of the hide, although a small bunch of around 10 broke away and swam to the island for a little while; 5 Shoveler hiding near the northern inlet; Teal 6male 4female active on the water; one male Stonechat perched on a solitary willow southeast of the hide, swaying in the wind; 4 Goosander flew low over the main pool from the south, with one landing; around 6 Magpies foraging around the the pump buildings south of the main pool.
