Erewash Meadows by Dave Sneap

Sightings during December from the 4th to the years end, involved a Great C Grebe on 22nd, usually 1 but up to 3 Little Egrets. Counts of wildfowl were still on the low side with maximum numbers of Wigeon 40. Mallard 70. Shoveler 6 & Teal 63.. A drake Goosander moved around the meadow pools from 22nd onwards. The usual waders =Lapwings 26 & Snipe, odd ones present some days, but they were present when a record count of 3 Woodcock was made on 23rd. Barn, Tawny & Little Owls where recorded. Kingfisher, a small flock of c6 Meadow Pipits, up to 9 Pied Wagtails + an odd Grey Wagtail. A total of 30 Redwing & 50 Fieldfare was the most, this winter side of the new year. The 2 Cetti's Warblers remained in their chosen territories all month, with Goldcrests & Willow Tits seen on a few days. Apart from a single Yellowhammer on 14th the top bird for December on a scarcity rating was a Marsh Tit on 19th both seen & most importantly seen to call, the first for about 8 years. Mammals seen = Fox. Hares. Rabbits. Water Vole & 5+ Grey Squirrels
