Carr Vale Sighting by Mark Beevers

Posted: Saturday 4th November 2017 by Carrvale

The 5th November was an interesting morning despite the aftermarth of the shooting yesterday which drastically reduced the duck numbers although by mid-morning Gadwall numbers had increased to 49, the female Pintail remained for her sixth day but there was no sign of any Shoveler. The most interesting occurrence was two distinct movements of Pink-footed Geese. Firstly between 0810 and 0835 a total of 1050 flew south-east to the north of the reserve in eight skeins, then between 0935 and 1000 another 1350 flew south-east in nine skeins but this time they tracked over Sutton Scarsdale and Doe Lea. To me this suggests that they came from two different areas in the north-west of the country. Other birds on 5th included 870 Wood Pigeons and 130 Fieldfare south-west, Peregrine, Cetti’s Warbler still singing occasionally, Chiffchaff, three Grey Wagtails and Brambling. Earlier in the month the highlights were on the 1st 98 Gadwall, five Water Rails, three Little Egrets, 35 Golden Plover, 225 Wood Pigeons south-west, distant Little Owl and Peregrine, 23 Long-tailed Tits and Chiffchaff. On the 2nd 475 Pink-footed Geese flew south-east in three skeins, a Grey Lag Goose flew south, distant Little Owl, the Cetti’s Warbler was heard again as was a Chiffchaff. On the 3rd five Water Rails, a Little Egret, 25 Stock Doves, distant Peregrine and the Cetti’s Warbler again. Birds of the day on the 4th were a Great White Egret present from 0820 until 1110 when it left south-east and a hawfinch that flew south at 1100. Other notable species were 60 Wigeon, 32 Teal, six Shoveler for their last day, Little Owl, male Peregrine over the reserve and the Cetti’s Warbler was heard again
