Witches Oak Water Sightings by Vic Bevan

14th October - Great excitement when first bird seen on entering the reserve was a Great White Egret (see separate sightings report)! Other highlights were 16 Grey Heron (11 together on Lake 4) and 6 Little Egret. Winter wildfowl numbers building steadily with Wigeon now at 81, and Teal at 51; Tufted Duck still the most numerous with 178. Full count 5 Little Grebe, 21 Great Crested Grebe, 25 Cormorant, 6 Little Egret, 1 Great White Egret, 16 Grey Heron, 31 Mute Swan, 10 Canada Goose, 81 Wigeon, 45 Gadwall, 51 Teal, 70 Mallard, 30 Shoveler, 178 Tufted Duck, 75 Coot, 50 Lapwing, 1 Kingfisher, 260 Black-headed Gull, 25 Lesser Black-backed Gull and 1 Water Rail. 7 Cetti's Warbler were heard calling. Butterflies were 3 Red Admiral, 2 Speckled Wood and 1 Comma with Common Darter and Migrant Hawker dragonflies also on the wing.
