Carr Vale by Mark Beevers

Posted: Monday 1st January 2018 by Carrvale

New Year update from Carr Vale up to 5th when three of our four regular good species were to be found so two Peregrines, Cettiā€™s Warbler and at least two Chiffchaffs all logged but the highlight of the day was three skeins of Pink-footed Geese (150 south-west, 300 south-east, 100 south-east between 1000 and 1230) but no sign since the 3rd of the Marsh Tit. Also two Goosanders flew north at dusk with other Goosanders seen on 1st (pair south), 2nd (male and five females south) and 4th (female present then north and south). Other notable records were on the 1st three Shovelers (one male) and 63 Teal and on 2nd two female Shoveler still with 140 Jackdaws north-west to roost. On 3rd 120 Wigeon and a female Siskin in with a flock of 40 Goldfinches. A Barn Owl was seen at the southern end of the recording area early mornings on 4th and 5th and on the 5th five Water Rails were calling.
