An exciting volunteering opportunity at the Whistlestop!

Location: Whistlestop Discovery Centre, Dale Road, Matlock Bath, Matlock DE4 3PT

The Whistlestop Discovery Centre is re-opening, and we need your help!

We have three exciting volunteering opportunities at the Whistlestop, from looking after our wildlife garden, helping to build our model railway or helping out in the shop and café. If you fancy making new friends and being part of something really special in the heart of the community please get in touch with us! 


Are you looking to develop customer service skills? Do you want to build your knowledge of retail and sales? Are you passionate about wildlife and have a talent to engage the general public in our vision? If so this volunteering opportunity could be just what you're looking for. The role is to assist in the running of the recently refurbished Whistlestop Discovery Centre at Matlock Bath railway station. Come and be part of this exciting project and help us develop our visitor and retail services.

This role is varied and can be tailored to your skills or your areas of interest, typical activities include:

• Welcoming visitors to the Whistlestop Discovery Centre
• Promoting membership
• Assisting with customer enquiries
• Promoting the work of the Trust
• Serving hot and cold drinks
• Processing sales on the till
• Creating stylish displays of goods and information
• Replenishing stock on the shop floor
• Stocktaking and other administrative tasks
• General end-of-day cleaning and tidying

Do you have enough energy, enthusiasm and ability to give 2 hours on a Friday, once a fortnight from April to October to help our garden look enticing to wildlife and amazing visitors?

Do you have some time to assist the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust (DWT) Commercial Development team and specifically the Retail Development Manager (RDM) with the development and maintenance of our visitor centre grounds?

Main tasks include:

• Pruning, watering and generally maintaining the plants
• General tidying of the garden and pond area
• Carrying out some weeding
• Keeping paths and walkways clear

Model railway

Do you know what a G scale indoor model railway is? If so would you like to join other model railway enthusiasts in creating and maintaining a suspended railway in the stunning historic station building at Matlock Bath station?

Be part of a group of volunteers helping us to create a suspended G scale indoor model railway to provide a link between our rooms and increase visitor numbers to the historic station building at Matlock Bath station.

Main tasks will be:

• Creating a model railway suspended from the ceilings and walls throughout the centre
• Advise on the sourcing of trains, track and other materials
• Building the layout, including baseboards, track work and electrics
• Repairing trains, track and electrics that develop problems
• Explaining about the history of Matlock Bath station to visitors at the centre (training will be provided)
• Explaining about the model railway to visitors at the centre
• Encouraging others to volunteer on the project
