Our dedicated team of badger vaccinators have vaccinated 113 badgers this year. 59 adults and 54 cubs, a fantastic result that is ensuring badgers in our county are vaccinated against Bovine tuberculosis (bTB).

We are continuing to work hard with our partners, National Trust and the Derbyshire Badger Groups to convince the Government that vaccination is far more effective and ethical than the badger cull, which they are widening.

Now the vaccination season is over for another year (July – October) we are be working on improving our volunteer training and hope to work with Defra on this. We are delighted to confirm that RSPB are on board and we look forward to working with them in the Eastern Moors later this year.

But the highlight for 2017 has to be re-capturing the eurthistic badger. We first trapped and vaccinated her in September 2015 and we were lucky enough to catch her again in the same place in August 2017! Eurthistic means the badger is sandy coloured. This happens when a mutation causes the black colouring cells of the badgers coat to be replaced by red ones. Debbie Schindler, our Badger Vaccination Co-ordinator said, “It was so nice to see her again and know she's still healthy and doing well.” We can’t wait to see what 2018 brings.
