Witches Oak Water Sightings by Vic Bevan

Thursday 28th December - A beautiful frosty morning with temperatures only just reaching 3C with a light W wind. Water levels are very high with water back flowing from the river Trent into the reserve along the outflow channel. Most notable was a male and 2 redhead Smew on Lake 5, with increased numbers of Goldeneye 30, and Pochard 22. Waterbird counts were Little Grebe 3, Great Crested Grebe 28, Cormorant 33, Little Egret 1, Grey Heron 3, Mute Swan 22, Wigeon 75, Gadwall 65, Teal 35, Mallard 22, Shoveler 6, Pochard 22, Tufted Duck 168, Goldeneye 30, Smew 3, Goosander 2, Water Rail 3, Moorhen 3, Coot 70, Snipe 1, Black-headed Gull 190, Lesser Black-backed Gull 1, Herring Gull 3 and Great Black-backed Gull 2.
