Erewash Meadows Sightings by Dave Sneap

Posted: Monday 16th October 2017 by Erewash

15th October - a sighting from 4th october was an early arrival of 4 Whooper Swans on 5th as they flew in calling from behind the trees & directly overhead and down the valley to railway marsh. Little Egrets usually 1 but sometimes 2 regularly. WeBS count was early this month & a count on 9th totalled - 40 Greylags. 28 Wigeon. 170 Mallard. 13 Shoveler. 71 Teal. 22 Lapwing and a Snipe. Grey Partridge was the first for a while on 5th and Barn Owl sightings have dwindled to odd occasional singles, but 2 seen also on 5th. 2 Skylarks over on 12th, long gone are the days in October when counts were in 3 figures. A single Swallow, again on the 5th spent a while around the north embankment, this looks to be the last sighting for this year. After a good but short lived passage of Stonechats, none have been seen since the 6th,but there could have been 8 in totall but if the earlier ones moved location, maybe only 4 birds involved. First Redwing, a single was on 12th with 12 on 15th. A record total of 9 Goldcrests (SB) on 15th + a Coal Tit. Bringing the report up to date, an influx of finches was good news with c40 Goldfinch & 11 Bullfinches Butterfly's in the period - single Small Coppers - 9th& 15th. Comma - 2 on 15th. Red Admiral - 4 on 15th. Animals - Hare's - 1 or 2 most visits. Rabbits up to 5. Stoat 1 watched for half an hour as it searched for Water Voles
