Carr Vale Sighting by Mark Beevers

3rd December produced a juvenile Whooper Swan north, counts of 92 Wigeon, 51 Gadwall, three Shoveler, drake Pochard, Water Rail calling, two Peregrines, brief singing Cetti's Warbler, two Chiffchaffs (embankment and reedbed screen) and 18 Reed Buntings around the mound bird table. Highlights during my time away were:- Whooper Swans, three on 19th, Pink-footed Geese, 170 east on 18th, 150 south-east on 19th, 170 east on 26th and 150 east on 28th, maximum counts for wildfowl Wigeon 83 on 27th, Gadwall 57 on 17th, Teal 35 on 27th, Shoveler up to four daily, Goosander, four on 27th, Red-legged Partridge, max of 27 on 18th, Little Egrets, two on 25th, singles on 20th, 22nd and 30th, Golden Lover, 35 on 24th and 14 on 30th, Caspian Gull, first winter on 21st, Little Owl on 29th and 30th, Peregrine, three on 17th with singles on six dates and two on 18th, Cetti's Warbler heard on 17th and 24th and Chiffchaff on 28th. Early December sightings include 56 Pink-footed Geese west, 50 Gadwall, 36 Teal, Barn Owl, two Peregrines and male Brambling on 1st, with 90 Wigeon, one Goosander, Little Owl and Merlin on 2nd.
