North Wingfleid

Location: Between Clay Cross and North Wingfield village.

Nearest Town:
 Chesterfield

Grid reference:  SK 404643  (OS Landranger 120 Mansfield & Dukeries)

How to get there: The reserve lies off the A6175 between Clay Cross and North Wingfield village. A surfaced path runs through the northern end of the reserve and a grassy path runs to the southern end.

Alongside a busy railway line, North Wingfield is a narrow strip of grassland, with the River Rother running through its southern half. In an area where there are few other wildlife habitats, the reserve is a useful refuge for a variety of plants and animals, including the water vole, which has now become scarce in many areas.

A small area of oak woodland has been extended - this wood and the surrounding grassland contain many different plants, including lady's smock, perforate St. John's wort and prickly lettuce.

In summer you are likely to see several common butterfly species, among them orange tip and peacock, while birds to look for include kingfisher, bullfinch and yellowhammer.
