Derbyshire Wildlife Trust is working on an exciting new partnership project to bring the natural world right into Derbyshire school grounds.

‘Trees for Schools’ is funded by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), and delivered in partnership with the Woodland Trust and Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. The project aims to connect children to the natural environment whilst simultaneously increasing native woodland.

Planting trees in school grounds increases the value of school grounds for learning, as children discover more about trees, their benefits to wildlife, and the wider environment. This is in addition to other benefits of planting such as creating areas of shade in large playing fields, establishing boundaries and increasing the diversity in forest school and woodland areas. The trees are a wonderful learning tool that can be enjoyed by the schools for generations to come. The new trees will also help to create more wildlife corridors and stepping stones across Derbyshire.

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust is already working with 17 schools who will be receiving and planting their trees in March, and there are more trees available for planting later in the year. If you are interested in finding out how to get a tree for your school please email ewood@derbyshirewt.co.uk
