Council Leader launches new nature reserve

Friday 2nd December 2011

Andrew Lewer, Leader of Derbyshire County Council, officially opened Derbyshire Wildlife Trust's new nature reserve at Shipley today. The reserve, which covers 182 acres, was purchased by the Trust earlier this year with funding from the 6Cs Strategic Green Infrastructure Growth Fund. It is the largest nature reserve in Derbyshire outside the Peak District National Park.

The reserve is on part of the land once used by the American Adventure theme park and is adjacent to Shipley Country Park. It will be known as Woodside Nature Reserve, after one of the collieries that once existed there. The name was one of several put forward as part of the public consultation carried out in the area by the Trust in the spring.

Cllr Lewer unveiled a new interpretation board, one of five on the site.
