Witches Oak Water by Rod Key

Posted: Thursday 1st February 2018 by Witchesoakwater

It was a bright morning with occasional cloudy intervals with a strong NW wind, force 4 blowing. It was again possible to access Phase 1 by the road as the water level had dropped under the A50 bridge tremendously but was still high in the lakes etc with the walkways still wet and wellies definitely needed. It was disappointing to be only able to find 1 Smew-a "redhead"-on the Reserve and this bird was very flighty. However a small flock of 3 Goosander including a superb drake from the car park was ample compensation. as was a Jay and a male Bullfinch on Phase 1. Wildfowl etc.numbers on the Reserve were 2 Little Grebes, 11 Great Crested Grebes, 17 Cormorants, 3 Mute Swans, 43 Wigeon, 24 Gadwall, 94 Teal,, 3 Pochard, 115 Tufted Duck, 21 Goldeneye, 1 Smew, 3 Goosander,1 Common Buzzard, 1 Common Gull-ad, 1 Jay and 1 Bullfinch. Elsewhere on the rest of the area the only bird of note was the regular lone Shelduck.
