Witches Oak Water by Rod Key

Posted: Thursday 18th January 2018 by Witchesoakwater

After the overnight strong winds and heavy rain the morning was bright and cold with only a NW force 3 wind blowing. Vis and light were good. However the main bund was very waterlogged and wellington boots are definitely recommended. The main highlight were 4 Smew-2 pairs-on Phase 1 on the pool in front of the "car park". Anyone planning to park here needs to be aware that these birds are very wary and soon disappear. Apart from that just the usual wildfowl noted although a count of 35 Goldeneye including one flock of 17 displaying birds was noteworthy. Counts on the Reserve were 3 Little Grebes, 11 Great Crested Grebes, 26 Cormorants, 5 Mute Swans, 49 Wigeon, 22 Gadwall, 26 Teal, 2 Shoveler, 3 Pochard, 92 Tufted Duck, 4 Smew and 2 Common Gulls -ads. Elsewhere on site were a Shelduck, 3 Goosander and an adult Caspian Gull. Roy Frost was on site on Monday 15th Jan and had 1 drake Smew plus a Muntjac down the central bund.
