Erewash Meadows by Dave Sneap

Posted: Monday 15th January 2018 by Erewash

Records for the first half of January are as follows. - Greylag Geese numbers continued to rise with 79 by the 14th. The single Pink-foot was still present with the flock. The numbers of the regular Duck species remain on the low side, but a few Gadwall have returned after being absent (apart from odd ones) for a few weeks. Green Woodpeckers are around again with far more records than Gt-Spotteds. The 14th was also better for thrushes with c120 Redwings & c30 Fieldfare. Ravens are also back after a few weeks absence and 2 Little Egrets (SB) were back on 14th. The previous day, (the 13th) the 3rd or 4th Great White Egret for the E.M. flew low south over the causeway late afternoon and could well have been on the pools a little further up the valley. The only mammals in this period - Hares - oc 1 or 2 and 1 Water Vole.
