Erewash Meadows Sightings by Dave Sneap

Posted: Sunday 3rd December 2017 by Erewash

The number of geese increased during late November & early December with the almost regular family of 5 Canada's joimed by another 10+ and Greylags with 70+. A lone Pinkfoot arrived on 23rd with the latest Greylag flock. Its a fair bet that it is the wintering bird of several recent years. Little Egrets present early this month meant they have been present in 2017 at some time or other every month except last January. A Skylark on 25th November was the first for several weeks coinsiding with a few Meadow Pipits. Winter Thrushes are still few, but at least the c50 Fieldfares, also on the 25th together with a few Redwings was a bit better. Odd Goldcrest, Willow Tit & Raven also featured in late November. Cetti's Warbler has become the' local' bird that the regulers keep looking/listening for, so although they are notoriously difficult to see, they can be noisy at times. By the 24th at least 2 had been confirmed with 3 a possability increasing to 4 a likelyhood on the 26th. All the later records are from the canalside. Animals recorded in the period where - - Fox -1. Rabbits up to 5. Brown Hare- 1. Grey Squirrel-2 & Water Voles- 1 to2.
