Carr Vale by Mark Beevers

Posted: Thursday 11th January 2018 by Carrvale

Latest news from Carr Vale is that on 11th still Peregrine, Cetti’s Warbler and two Chiffchaffs present. Wildfowl over the last few days have included maximum counts of 121 Wigeon (11th), 39 Gadwall (on 8th) and 58 Teal on 11th. Additional species were on 6th 325 Pink-footed Geese in four skeins between 0940 and 1050, male Goosander north, 18 Cormorants, the Marsh Tit again and 60 Fieldfare. On 7th frustratingly four distant swan sp flew south just after 1000. They were too far to id but at 0930 that morning four Whooper Swans flew north-west over Budby pumping station in north Notts so I suspect these could be the same birds as we have a track record of birds being seen at both sites. Also on 7th there was a good movement of Pink-footed Geese with 725 going north-west in ten skeins between 0912 and 1050 followed by c180 south-east at 1120, 16 Cormorants north and four Lesser Redpoll. On 8th 90 Pink-footed Geese flew north-west with ten Grey Lag Geese north. An additional Grey Lag Goose was in with the Canada Geese until it too flew north, 70 Fieldfare flew north, two Willow Tits were singing and this was the last date for the Marsh Tit (so far). A walk over fields to the west of the reserve produced notable flocks of 55 Sky Larks and 100+ Meadow Pipits, the latter a very good count for winter. On 9th Lapwings had increased to 250 but the bird of the day was a new Cetti’s Warbler, found in typha at the north-east corner of Meadow Flash with the original bird in South Marsh still present. Lapwings had increased to 525 on 10th when the second Cetti’s Warbler was seen and there was a count of 11 Bullfinches on the mound table whilst on 11th a male Shoveler was on the flashes, c20 Siskins flew north and five Lesser Redpolls were on the embankment.
