New Wild Garden by Ian Hodgson, published by Frances Lincoln at £25 hardback.New Wild Garden by Ian Hodgson, published by Frances Lincoln at £25 hardback.

This weighty book is full of down to earth practical advice about how to plant and what to plant to achieve stunningly colourful effects in your garden.

There are copious photographs of lovely wild gardens full of flowers both native and introduced with a clear emphasis on creating lovely looking gardens rather more I felt than ones full of wildlife.

The focus however is on the plants, as perhaps you would expect from a horticultural author. There’s not too much, for example, about which plants are good for bees or butterflies and I didn’t see a single photo showing any insects on the flowers at all.

Furthermore, the impression is that you would need to set aside quite a lot of money first to landscape your patch and then to plant it up with (often expensive) plants.

These things aside, if you are wanting to create a wildflower meadow or a herbaceous border for pollinators, then this book has much useful and clear instruction laid out in a step-by-step manner.

At £25 you might just want to borrow a copy from your local library first before putting your hand in your pocket.
